Reader to Reader: What was your most embarrassing moment in the salon?

May 1, 1997

I was giving an elderly client a pedicure and she leaned back too far in the chair, causing it to give way. The chair knocked over a partition which divided the pedicure area from the rest of the salon. The partition knocked over a free-standing bird cage, causing the birds to escape in terror. The bird cage then knocked over the coat rack, which knocked over a rack of polishes, sending them crashing to the floor. Several bottles of polish were broken and mixed with scattered bird seed on the floor. When the feathers settled, I looked at my client in disbelief as she asked, “Did I do that?”

I was working in an exclusive, three-level salon. One day I was on the second level showing a client our jewelry case. She asked to see something else, so I proceeded to step backwards and missed four stairs, landing right on my rear. That’s not the worst of it. As I sat on the floor not knowing whether to laugh or cry, I looked to my left and there was this gorgeous guy getting his hair cut, looking right at me and laughing. To top it all off, my boss yells out across the salon, “Don’t wear heels here again.” (This wasn’t my first fall.) To say the least, I was very embarrassed.

The most embarrassing moment of my career [so far] happened shortly after I began working at a very high-profile day spa. I was still feeling unsettled in my new position when I was asked to give the owner’s girlfriend a pedicure. We were really enjoying ourselves during the service, when without warning, she dropped her head, her body went into a roll, she swiveled out of the high-platform chair, then fell to the ground. Her feet kicked the water out of the tub in a splashing wave, causing my products and tools to fly everywhere. Her head was bleeding as she lay unconscious on the floor. I thought I killed her. I propelled my stool in reverse and started yelling, “911! 911!” It seemed as though everyone in the day spa was crowded around us, then the paramedics arrived. It turns out my client had an epileptic seizure, but fortunately was not badly hurt. Even though this was a traumatic experience, I was extremely embarrassed and I was literally shaking the entire day.

My most embarrassing moment in the salon when I was waxing a client. The temperature in the salon was very cold, and when I was ready to pull the wax off her eyebrow, only the cloth came off; the wax still remained on her brow. I was very nervous and scared. Ever since then, I no longer wax eyebrows.

Dear Shari: How do I build my nail business in a full-service salon that is made up of booth renters?

I am a booth renter in a full-service salon with no receptionist. We are all responsible for our own appointments. With so many hairstylists renting in the same salon you’d think my book would be full but it’s not. I get very few client recommendations from the stylists and they are usually one-shot deals. I understand they have no obligation to talk up my services with their clients, but you’d think that as part of a team they’d want to do so. The salon owner has brought up the subject at almost every quarterly meeting but it has made no difference. I don’t service the stylists’ nails because they do their own or have acrylics done by techs they’ve been going to for years. Any suggestions? Sincerely, Baffled... read more

How can I get clients to buy retail items?

I don’t know if people’s budgets are to blame but they don’t want to buy products for at-home use. They want you to give it away to them for free. I do have promotions and giveaways from time to time, but I can not afford to constantly give away products. How can I get them to pay for these items?... read more

Dear Shari: What can I do when a salon owner randomly charges me for expenses in addition to my booth rent?

I just began work as a booth renter. It’s my understanding I am responsible to pay only the amount I contracted to pay monthly. However, the salon owner is asking for money here and there to pay for things like beverages, clothing, advertising, etc. None of these things were ever discussed or agreed on previously. Shouldn’t the monthly rent cover the things she wants to have at her salon? Sincerely, Disgruntled Booth Renter... read more

What Would You Do if Business at Your Salon Slowed Down?

Although it’s not something most nail techs or salons owners ever want to think about, there may come a time when business may slow down. This may be due to a bad economy or other reasons. Have you ever stopped to think what you would do if this ever happened to you? We posed that question to a salon owner, a booth renter, and an employee. Here’s what they had to say.... read more
