What could suddenly brown toenails mean?

July 1, 1999

Psoriasis usually shows up as a pitting of the nail and, over time, it causes nails to thicken. It is normally not associated with a brown color. in my experience, the most common cause of a brown discoloration of the nails is a fungus, but psoriasis can occur as an overlay at the same time.

My current favorite over-the-counter topical solution for treating nail fungus is Nail Cure, which should be applied on the nails two to four times a day. please be aware that it will not work through nail polish. When using this product, results are seen in as little as three months, but can take up to six to nine months to treat an extreme case of toenail fungus. Nail Cure can be purchases through Justlin Medical (Woodinville, Wash.) at (800) 343-7786. -- Ivar Roth, DPM
