Why do my acrylic nails turn yellow by the time my clients come back for their fill?

January 1, 2006

Acrylic can discolor when exposed to sunlight or UV tanning rays. Some discolor faster than others depending on the "recipe" the manufacturer uses. Most discolor slowly enough that the older acrylic is being removed as you shorten the length of the nail during a fill. Many manufacturers have a finishing top coat that acts as a UV blocking agent. Do not confuse this with a non-yellowing top coat.

Discoloration can also come from chemicals being sandwiched in between new and previously applied acrylic. The most common culprits are primer and base coat when doing a fill. Ensure that primer is used very sparingly and avoid getting in on the previously applied acrylic. You can also better remove chemical residue from the surface of the nail by using polish remover that contains a little acetone, since this will cut the polish better, and by roughing up the pre-existing acrylic during prep. – MaeLing Parrish, Nail Sensation in Columbus, Ohio

Why do I get lifting around the cuticle on my acrylics?

I have problems with acrylic lifting. I have very good prep and can find no problems with my application. The only thing I can come up with is maybe I put the apex in the wrong spot. I put my apex in the middle of the nail, not necessarily on the spot on the natural nail where the free edge joins the nail bed. Is this the reason why I get lifting around the cuticle? It seems if I put the apex back further (if the nails are long) then they will look a bit silly.... read more

Why do I have air bubbles when I glue on tips?

When I glue on tips there are always air bubbles that show. In addition, it takes forever for the glue to dry.
