Tanis Darling joined the Ottawa Academy & West End Academy in Gloucester, where, as nail technician program instructor, she teaches one of the longest and most in-depth programs in the province.

Anyone can teach you to manicure textbook-perfect nails – it takes a pro like Joanne Linck, head instructor at Cosmetique School of Nail Technology in Burnaby, British Columbia, to give a new tech the confidence to manage even the most hard-to-handle hands.

Canadians are just as passionate about the nail industry as their American neighbors, and with the recent rise of nails-only salons and nail services up north, the time is right for the installation of associations, expansion of education, and – most importantly – the certification or licensure of nail technicians.

I was in beautiful Toronto for four days visiting salons and attending the Canadian Hairdresser magazine show. I learned that our salon neighbors to the north share a lot of the same joys and frustrations in their work as you do. Although still not as prominent, discount salons are redefining the nail industry there as well.
This year's winners span North America and inspire with their creative and optimistic approach to business and customer service, as well as their passion for nails.
