For this week’s Last Chance Design Lab challenge sponsored by CND, new Last Chance champion Lauren Boyd takes on newly eliminated Lavette Cephus. The two will battle it out one-on-one to see who has a chance of staying in the competition. CND’s Jan Arnold will select her favorite look next Friday and you’ll find out who will remain for at least one more week.

All Last Chance challenges are done on a single nail tip. They are also asked to describe their looks. There are no other elements to this battle.

This week’s Last Chance challenge is loosely related to SuperNail’s super heroes and villains challenge.

Week 9: What’s Your Super Power? On a single nail tip, show us what your super power would be. You can use any materials you see fit (both nail- and non-nail-related).

Here are the looks they created:

My super power is paint manipulation, a play on telekinesis and size manipulation. I’m a tagger that can basically do all of my graffiti with my mind as long as some available paint is around. I sculpted some Montana Gold paint cans by using a straw to develop the body of the can. I used gold model train paint for the can color and I used a calligraphy pen to write the name of the brand on the can. Since I’m using my mind to create my art, I wanted it to be suspended in the air, so I used acrylic to sculpt the black shadow and then sculpted the word (SNEZ) itself. Then I cut three pieces of wire and fixed it between the layers and attached it to the nail so it could stand on its own. Then I covered it with acrylic and made a dripping effect and puddles on and off the nail. I used acrylic paint and standard polish to paint the word and paint puddles.

Now I had to place the cans in the appropriate places so you can see the paint being taken from the cans to create my art. Since I needed an alley to create my art, I made a concrete wall and light post with Memphis tags on it for my scenery. My light post was made with acrylic on a straw and wire. And like a thief in the night Graffiti Chick strikes again and no one is the wiser because my fingerprints are nowhere to be found!

Lavette Cephus

Here’s a female superhero stretching from a nail, holding some of her day to day living. A child dancer, her purse, and a bottle of polish represent her career as a nail tech. As a mother and salon owner, I’m already equipped with a full arsenal of super powers! One superpower that would be extremely beneficial to me is elasticity. Every day I feel as though I’m overextending myself, spreading myself thin all over town while juggling my many acts. This nail is an interpretation of how I will twist, bend, push, and pull myself for my dreams. Having elasticity for a superpower would allow me to stretch to new heights and reach new accomplishments! This competition has inspired me to do just that.

Congratulations to Lavette Cephus for winning this week’s Last Chance Design Lab challenge. Lavette went up against reigning Last Chance champ Lauren Boyd to create a single nail tip showing us what her super power would be if she could have just one. She was allowed to use any materials of her choosing. CND’s Jan Arnold chose the winner.

Jan said, “I choose Lavette’s nail this week for the Last Chance Challenge because it communicated her commitment to her career, showed the balance of her life as a mom and demonstrated her love of being a nail professional. Focusing on being more flexible and having the “elasticity” to juggle it all shows she is open to change and willing to stretch to be the best! I also love how the nail was incorporated into the design to bring her theme to life. I found her to be most inspiring this week.”

This means Lavette will move on to compete against the next eliminated contestant. Find out on Friday who that will be.
