Burlesque is a performance. It’s empowerment, it’s self-awareness, it’s comfort in sexuality. It’s the art of classic striptease — with emphasis on the tease. So says burlesque performer Ruby Kitten, also known as Anna Mayrhofer, owner of Exalted Nail and Body in Errington on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

“I first became familiar with the ancient art of making beads from glass — called lampworking — after taking a jewelry class at my local craft store,” says Donna Trull, a nail tech at Studio 413 Salon and Spa in Albany, Ga.

A component of Thai massage, Thai foot massage was born out of the Ayurvedic medical system in India thousands of years ago.

“I never wanted to be in a job that would have me confined to an office pushing paper,” says Jenny Constantine, owner of a mobile nail service called Junique Nails, based in Diego Martin, Trinidad. That’s also one of the reasons behind her other career choice: police officer.

“When I’m not doing nails you can find me taking photos,” says Kari Evich, owner of Nails by Kari, located inside Merle Norman, in Covington, Va. With a partner, she also owns a graphic design and photography business called Tayvich Photography.

“I started paintballing at age 10,” says Classic Mully, a nail tech at Personalities Salon in Queen Creek, Ariz.

When nail tech Suzette Rogers heard that her longtime client was once again going on a medical mission to Guatemala, her interest was piqued. The more she heard the more she knew she had to go along.
