My Other Life: Meggan Joy Anderson, Golfer

When Meggan Joy Anderson began golfing 10 years ago, she wasn’t the greatest. “I ran around with a group of girlfriends who golfed in a league and they needed an extra player. I figured I had nothing to lose but a few golf balls,” recalls Anderson, owner of Nail’D By Meggan inside Burley, Idaho’s Dreamz Day Spa and Salon. “Early on, I had a few water balls and even threw my clubs a few times.” But after she got the hang of it, she was truly hooked. She now claims an 18 handicap, about average for recreational players, she says.

Anderson took over as head of the women’s golf league in Burley a few years ago. “I have about 42 women who golf in the Thursday night league; it’s crazy at times with all those women!” she says. “There are different levels of golfers, but I tell the girls that we’re all out to have a good time — who cares if you get a 10 on the hole or hole in one, just have fun.” As head of the league she makes sure everyone is on the right hole, keeps track of the scores, and plans fun nights. “My favorite is awards night. We go to our local 19th hole, have awesome barbeque, and give away prizes.”

As to why she loves golf, she points to the lessons the sport has taught her — number-one among them: patience. “The game is intense,” she says. “I mostly love being on the greens with my girls and the memories we make.”
It’s not always easy to juggle her clients and her hobby. “When golf season starts, I always tease my clients that I’m off to join the LPGA Tour and I might not be back.”
