In the professional beauty industry, success is built on strong relationships due to its innate ties to personal and professional self-expression and well-being. Whether it's the bond between a stylist and a client, or the partnership between a brand representative and a salon owner, these relationships are rooted in trust, individuality, and mutual success. That’s why approaching your industry connections with an open mind and a personal touch is so crucial. It’s about building a supportive network that elevates both you and your business.
Absolute transparency and a relentless pursuit of excellence are two qualities that will set you apart and guide you toward your goals. My career has been shaped by leaders who not only recognized my potential but also saw my eagerness to learn and grow. I often attribute my early-career success to those who took the time to mentor me, guiding me to identify blind spots and adjust my path accordingly. That said, I would never have seen those blind spots from their perspective if I hadn’t first asked for mentorship and guidance.
To quote one of my favorite visionaries and “networkers,” Anthony Bourdain: "Perhaps wisdom... is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go." This humble yet confident mindset gives me the freedom to recognize my potential for greatness while acknowledging there is still so much to learn from those around me.
So, whether you’re attending a hair show or joining industry organizations like the Professional Beauty Association’s Future Leaders Program, step out of your comfort zone, and make networking a priority. Don’t be afraid to take a step back to learn, whether it’s going back to school for further education or pursuing an apprenticeship opportunity. Ensure that you stay true to yourself and your goals, while approaching networking like meeting a new friend—we’re all human! Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to people you admire, and be bold about why you’re excited to connect. Seek mentorship from those you look up to, but most importantly, be clear on who you are and what you want to achieve. Embrace your unique talents and don’t shy away from promoting them—after all, you are your own best advocate!
