Two Negatives Make a Positive: The Top 3 and the Bottom 3

Challenge six, sponsored by Bio Seaweed Gel, asked our Top 7 to make a negative space nail art design that had plenty of room to breathe. This week’s guest judge was Hellen Luu of Bio Seaweed Gel.

In alphabetical order, the top 3 are:

Halley: Your set had a lot of negative space as well as other breathable elements (those awesome succulents!). Check the audio on your video, as sometimes it goes in and out and the music can be distracting.

Hemi: The judges loved the look of this set overall, with great line work and a smashing crystal technique. The shape of the nail could have been a sleeker one though, so the judges recommend watching which shape you choose to design on.

Valerie: You took a risk this week, and the judges felt it paid off. They understood and enjoyed the concept of negative space carvings. The technique of unveiling the color layers was so cool to watch, and it really showed off your eye for color. They only wish there had been more negative space/breathability in the final design.

The following tech can breathe again. She is in the middle of this week’s pack and is safe. Congratulations to:

Dana: Without a doubt, you have a very steady handling of your brush. Your color story was calm and tranquil, and exemplified the unity theme. Your tutorial is clear, focused, and full of good advice. Don’t be afraid to push your design just a bit more, as we are nearing the final challenges of the season.

Unfortunately, there always has to be a bottom group. The bottom 3, in alphabetical order, are:

Ashton: The judges liked your take on negative space, but wanted to see more negative elements. As always, nice detail work in your design.

Jenna: The detail and texture on your planets are great. However, the long clear stilettos were a missed opportunity to show off more of your artwork.

Kostadina: Your broken glass concept was a cool one that showed good use of negative space, texture, and color choice. Your vision and line work were sharp and clear. Your videos are definitely improving. Just watch the lighting — it seems inconsistent.
