After only a year and a half, The Polish Room in Orlando, Fla., packs in a steady, nail art-loving clientele. The tight-knit staff even travels to the Premiere Orlando show together for education and shopping.

This month as I was putting together our Crowdsourcing piece I discovered that there are many things that scare you.

In 8 days, executive editor Beth Livesay saw 18 nail salons across six states. That’s a total of 2,730 miles!

My last leg of the trip was an ambitious one. I traveled to Baltimore to tour salons in the surrounding area, which included Middletown, Del., and Silver Spring, Md.
Columbus is a college town that is home to two sidewalk-based salons that benefit from the young crowd always on the run.
Omaha is home to up-and-coming nail art studios featuring some of the rising stars in the industry.
Wall art and the art of running a salon went hand-in-hand in Denver, Colo.

Knieya Peterson’s quirky tribute to the 1993 baseball movie The Sandlot and Beth Elliott’s detailed painting of Rihanna both captured the judges’ imaginations, leading to a tie for top place! These two worthy winners are joined by excellent entries representing celebrities from Gene Simmons to Queen Elizabeth II.
I wrap up the Northern California leg of my tour by visiting two more salons.
