Competing is one of the best ways to hone your craft and get noticed. In the world of nails, there are many opportunities to showcase your talents and grow as a result. We talked to some regulars on the competition circuit to find out what you’ll need to know if you want to compete — and possibly win big.

Photographer Helen Maurene Cooper recently released her book, Paint & Polish: Cultural Economy and Visual Culture from the West Side. Cooper spent eight years building relationships with nail techs, salon owners, and clients in Chicago to take the photos that appeared in this book. NAILS spoke with the photographer and author about why she found the subject of nails so fascinating.

Creating contrast with color is one thing, but Hand & Nail Harmony educator Bryan Vu knows that you can also create contrast with texture. The Kingwood, Texas-based salon and beauty school owner was inspired by the blades and leaves of succulent plants for this design.
