Photographer Helen Maurene Cooper recently released her book, Paint & Polish: Cultural Economy and Visual Culture from the West Side. Cooper spent eight years building relationships with nail techs, salon owners, and clients in Chicago to take the photos that appeared in this book. NAILS spoke with the photographer and author about why she found the subject of nails so fascinating.
Amy Gustafson (Victoria, BC, Canada) creates a 3-D design on a single nail tip using a variety of nail products based on a "music" theme. "I was inspired by the headphones and colours I saw right away. I loved that the headphones became something else (the script Love). I decided that I would have the headphones become the piece of music. I loved the curves of the photos I saw and thought I would incorporate that somehow with it going outside the nail. I love flashy so I thought the more sparkles the better."
When nail artist Annie Leonard saw an article about a nail artist who handpainted the Mona Lisa on a nail tip and made jewelry, she got inspired.
My summer is coming to and end, and I'm so glad to have my kids back in school. I tried to make it all about my kids this summer, but work always gets in the way.
