April 2014's InStyle magazine tested products to see if they really work. Mischo's Luxury Nail Lacquer claims "green," and "all-natural." The testers ensured that while not totally green, these polishes are five-free, meaning they don't have formaldehyde, or formaldehyde resin, camphor, tolune, or dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Manicurist Madeline Poole gives the polish a two thumbs up for coverage, shine and the shape of the brush. InStyle testers were disappointed about quickly their nails chipped, but with a paper-heavy office job, chipping might be unavoidable.

Photographer Helen Maurene Cooper recently released her book, Paint & Polish: Cultural Economy and Visual Culture from the West Side. Cooper spent eight years building relationships with nail techs, salon owners, and clients in Chicago to take the photos that appeared in this book. NAILS spoke with the photographer and author about why she found the subject of nails so fascinating.
