Manicurists in California will once again regain their right to work independently as booth renters. Advocacy from the Professional Beauty Federation helped reverse an earlier decision.
As of January 1, 2025, California will no longer allow nail salons to have independent station or booth renters in their salons and all manicurists will be classified as employees.
Beauty experts took a deep dive into compliance for owners. The event was sold-out.
While this law doesn’t apply outside of California, it could become a model for other states. Salons utilizing renters will have to run a much tighter ship and booth renters will need to show specific ways in which they are independent from the salon owner.
