October 5 2008 - Q&A: Technique

Dear Shari: My pedicurists don't like doing pedicures.

Dear Shari,

Out of my staff of seven nail techs only one likes to do pedicures. They openly discuss how yucky it is to touch someone’s feet. What can I do? Sincerely, Peeved at My Pedicurists

Dear Peeved:

First off, I would cut off the negative chatter. No one should ever give anything but positive input on any service offered by your salon (even if they have to lie). Second, the nail techs who don’t like to do pedicures because they are “yucky” need to consider the fact that hands go all sorts of places feet don’t go. Think about it. You are no more likely to pick up “something” from a pedicure than a manicure. If your nail techs still have a problem with this, remind them that they’re soaking the feet in products that are specially made to kill any bacteria as well as other germs. You can even follow the soak with a quick rub down with alcohol gel. Also, more and more pedicurists are wearing gloves to protect themselves and the customer. I know a lot of techs feel gloves take away from the service, but if you survey your customers you’ll likely find they view it as being professional.
