Can callus buildup be caused by a fungus?

ARTICLE TOOLS        | E-MailPrintRSS

Fungal infections of the feet are usually characterized by redness, peeling, and/or itching. More likely what you are describing is just dead skin due to ineffective foot hygiene. Callus buildup is usually hard and is the foot’s way of protecting an area from rubbing or friction — as in improper shoe fit. If you add heat and moisture into the mix, you’d be more likely to have blisters instead. — Patti Glick, RN, is The Foot Nurse
