Cleopatra was onto something with her milk and honey baths. According to the National Honey Board, honey has antioxidant properties that protect and rejuvenate the skin, while its hydrogen peroxide properties aid in cleansing. Honey also has humectant properties that trap and seal in moisture, leaving skin soft and supple.

Try these homemade honey beauty recipes, compliments of the National Honey Board.

HONEY CLEANSING SCRUB: Mix one tablespoon of honey with two tablespoons of finely ground almonds and ½ teaspoon of lemon juice. Rub gently on the hands, then rinse with warm water.

ROSE OIL & HONEY MASK: Mix two tablespoons of honey with two tablespoons sweet almond oil and five drops of rose essential oil. Massage onto clean hands and arms, relax for 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. Gently pat dry.

MOISTURE MASK: Mix two tablespoons of milk. Smooth over hands and forearms. Leave on 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

SMOOTHING SKIN LOTION: Mix one teaspoon of honey with one teaspoon of vegetable oil and ¼ teaspoon of lemon juice. Rub onto hands (don’t forget the elbows) and feet.

SKIN SOFTENING BATH: Add a generous dollop of honey to foot bath water for a fragrant, silky soak.

FOAMING VANILLA HONEY BATH: Mix one cup of sweet almond oil with ½ cup of honey, ½ cup of liquid soap, and one tablespoon of vanilla extract into the oil until fully blended. Pour into a clean plastic bottle with a tight-fitting stopper of lid. Shake gently before using. Pour a dollop into your hand-soak bowl or foot bath then add warm water.
