On the Road: Be Beauty, San Diego

June 1, 2010  | Article

I found Be Beauty by posting a message on the NAILS Facebook page (www.facebook.com/nailsmag) that I was looking for a salon in San Diego. Nail tech Brian Garces messaged me back to come to the salon where he works. When I looked it up online and saw it was in a cute little 1920s-era bungalow, I was sold.

Java is my friend, so it’s a good sign when I head into a salon and they have a coffee bar. Food too? Even better. I can grab a bite to eat and be pampered at the same time. That’s what I found at the Body Shoppe Spa in Yorktown, Va.

The Painted Nail — a cozy, shabby chic-style space with white-washed wood floors, big comfy white armchairs, vintage-inspired chandeliers, and pretty purple walls. Clients (including many celebrities) come in to get their nails done, but stay for the camaraderie.

It’s sometimes instructive to take a look at the nail salon industry from the other side of the chair: the client’s side. That’s why it can be especially insightful to chat with a select breed of nail salon owner: the client-turned-salon entrepreneur.

On the Road: Polished Nail Bar, Charlotte, N.C.

October 1, 2009  | Article

About a year ago I was visiting my mom in North Carolina. She wanted to get a pedicure so I grabbed a copy of the local monthly Skirt. There was an ad for Polished Nail Bar. We went in for services, but I didn’t call ahead and tell them I was coming. (Meaning, I was incognito — not Hannah the editor of NAILS, just Hannah the girl who was taking her mom to get a pedicure.) After our services, I introduced myself to the owner and promised to come back on an “official” visit next time.

Germany in March can be a bit colder than my native Southern California, so it was with pleasure that I ducked into a local salon to warm up and get a quick manicure. Alessandro International Nail and Foot Spa is located in a quiet suburban city just southeast of Dusseldorf.

Chi Nail Bar, located right off the well-known shopping mecca that is Rodeo Drive, opened this February. I think we can all admit that it’s not exactly the ideal time to open up a new business, what with the economic crisis and all. But that didn’t stop Ton, a second generation nail tech, from opening up her newest salon. In the business for 10 years, Ton owned several other salons before coming across the space in chic Beverly Hills.

I knew I’d fallen hopelessly down the wondrous nail-salon-industry rabbit hole when my friend Claire’s birthday was approaching and my first suggestion was to throw her a pedicure party. Claire fell in love with the idea too, and, after confirming a date with one of my favorite salons, The Nail Bar in Hermosa Beach, Calif., the invitations quickly went out.
