Q.

I know you can you use primer with liquid-and-powder systems, but what about with UV gels?

A.

Some UV gel systems are designed to use a “primer,” which is a generic name for an adhesion-promoting layer applied to the natural nail plate. Primers are designed to improve adhesion to the natural nail plate and are specially formulated to work with a specific UV gel product. It’s good practice to use UV gels exactly as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions. Primers designed for use with liquid and powder should be used only with those types of systems. If you’re having adhesion problems, check with the manufacturer for recommendations and pay close attention to how you prepare an actual nail plate. — Doug Schoon is CND’s chief scientific advisor.
