What causes the tips to crack but the gel overlay to remain intact?

November 13, 2007 | Bookmark +

My coworkers and I have noticed that whenever we use white/French tips with a clear gel overlay, after about four days the tip cracks under the gel but the gel remains intact and uncracked. What’s going on?

Answer

It sounds like the tips you are using are coming into contact with an agent that breaks down the plastic. It may be that you’re getting the bonding agent that adheres the gel to the natural nail on the tip.

If it’s not that, it could be the cleanser you use before you apply the products. Many gel cleansers contain acetone and acetone will break down the tip, causing cracks. It is common for the cracks to show up later. The other thing that could possibly be happening (this is the least likely) is you are cleansing under the nail with an acetone-based product. — Amy Becker is founder of Masterworks Innovations.

How can I prevent lifting when my client's hands are constantly in water?

I have a client who is in the medical field so her hands are constantly in water. She has me keep the length of her acrylic nails short. No matter what I do, she always has at least one nail that comes off, and she always has lifting and gets water under the acrylic. I prep the nails correctly, I have a cuticle bit to clean the cuticle area, and I wipe the nail with alcohol, dehydrate the nail, and prime the nail. What should I do?
