Q&A

What steps are taken by a state board to shut down (or fine) a salon that uses MMA illegally?

Q.

I live in Indiana and I want to know what steps, if any, are taken by the state board to shut down (or fine) the non-standard salons that blatantly use MMA in a state where it is supposed to be illegal?

A.

The State Board of Cosmetology Examiners does not have the authority to shut down or discipline a salon that is in violation of the statutes or rules. The proper procedure is a consumer or the compliance division of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency files a complaint with the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s office. The Attorney General’s office investigates the complaint and files charges with the board if they find that there has been a violation. The board will hear the case and impose disciplinary sanctions if they rule against the licensee. Sanctions include possible fines and anything from a letter of reprimand up to revocation.  –  Tracy Hicks is the director of the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology Examiners.
