Q&A

How much is too much primer?

Q.

I am a new nail tech, and in school we only did acrylics on plastic tips. I came out licensed and loving it but knowing little about proper application on actual clients. I have taught myself through trial and error and with this wonderful magazine NAILS, but my question is: How much is too much primer?

A.

In my experience dipping your brush in the primer for each nail can load the brush with too much primer. If you dip your primer brush and drag it along the top of the primer bottle to remove excess, the brush will be loaded with enough primer to use on one hand. You only want enough primer to cover the nail and not get any on the skin around the nail. When you apply the primer the nail should look wet, but it should dry pretty quickly. If you have too much primer it will take longer to dry, and if the nail isn’t fully dry before you start your application you will see lifting quickly.
