A Cure for That Pain in the Neck

For true head-to-toe pampering, you can’t beat the addition of a heated aromatherapy neck wrap to your pedicure service. Many upscale salons – like the Senator Inn & Spa in Augusta, Maine – have recently added this soothing extra to their top-of-the-line treatments. And why not? It’s an easy way to melt away clients’ tension that requires no special skills and little in the way of time or money.

“Clients love it,” says Kandra Ayotte-Foster, the spa director at the Senator Inn. “We definitely hear from them if the therapist forgets to use it.” Part of the spa’s $59 Spa Ritual Pedicure, the flaxseed-filled wrap is heated for a minute or two in the microwave. Ayotte-Foster recommends turning it over midway through so it heats evenly. The technician spreads a towel around the client’s shoulders before placing the wrap, which should remain warm throughout the one-hour service. “Lavender is a popular scent and clove is just amazing,” she says. While many wraps come fragrant herbs encased inside, the scent can dissipate over time. Ayotte-Foster remedies this by adding a few drops of essential oil to the outside.
