Many beauty schools are closing their nail programs, according to the American Association of Cosmetology Schools. In an article in its member magazine BeautyLink, the AACS says a top reason is the lack of federal funding. "Currently, the Pell Grant program requires a course to be at least 600 clock hours and 15 weeks in length for a student to be eligible....The majority fall short of the 600-hour minimum."
However, the article also notes that there are many reasons to add a nail program to a beauty school, including that there are many new opportunities for nail techs (such as working as mass-market retailers) and plenty of job openings in traditional locations in salons.
