Used for years in the medical field, modified vinyl plastics have a new application: nail tips. This is not so surprising if you take into account the roster of amazing properties exhibited by this material widely used in the manufacturing of foil protection for pharmaceuticals and blood bags. It’s flexible, shape conforming, non-fracturing, non-staining, non-yellowing, virtually non-flammable, and won’t break down in acetone, Dubbed Poly Flex technology by its research and development team, NSI holds the patent on this material which offers the perfect prescription for a new nail tip.
But what’s clear now was not so obvious five years ago when NSI began its search for a better tip technology. NSI’s R&D staff set their sights on finding an injection moldable, medically safe, user-friendly material from which to mold their “tips of the future. “They began by modifying existing materials such as ABS, nylon, and Delrin, but that brought them no closer to their goals. Finally, after exhaustive testing, high-impact modified vinyl plastic emerged as the material they were looking for. The problem then facing the R&D team was how to produce this new material using existing machine tools and injection molding equipment Twenty-five versions of the original formula were evaluated before the company discovered the optimum temperature level and injection speed. Tool designs and injection molding techniques also had to be modified to obtain the desired results.
