Inspired by artist Dale Chihuly’s sculptural glass works (particularly the ceiling piece Fiori di Como in Las Vegas’ Bellagio Hotel and Casino) we asked Columbus, Ohio-based nail tech MaeLing Parrish to recreate the design for this month’s cover model.

Asked how she came up with the look, Parrish, dean of education and Midwest regional education manager for Hand and Nail Harmony, says, “I can’t take credit for the end concept, only the idea that spurred it. I was in Mexico and I was wearing a basic Gelish fade and I wanted to add some zip to it since they love bright colors and designs in Mexico. I tried to put small white dots onto one of our transparent pinks and the shapes dispersed. It was kind of like an underwater bubble look. One of our Harmony educators in Mexico took the general idea and ran with it with brighter colors.” NAILS editor Hannah Lee saw Parrish doing demos with the bright colors at IBS New York and noticed it looked a lot like Chihuly’s bright and beautiful blown glass pieces and we knew it was a technique our readers would love.
Hand and Nail Harmony dean of education MaeLing Parrish has been doing nails for more than 22 years. She currently splits her time between traveling for the company and working in her Reynoldsburg, Ohio-based salon Nail Sensation.
Parrish, who has been an educator with Hand and Nail Harmony since 2010, was previously an educator for EZ Flow working with Harmony’s founders Danny Haile, David Daniel, and Gari-Dawn Tingler. Even though she spends a lot of time traveling for Harmony, the veteran tech still spends plenty of time with her clients at her Reynoldsburg, Ohio salon Nail Sensation. “I work Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and every other Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. When my traveling interferes with my regular days, I work whatever days I need to in order to accommodate my clients.”

Here’s how you can do these nails:
1. Prep the nail, apply Gelish Foundation, and cure. Apply a coat of Gelish Sheek White to the entire nail. Cure.
2. In a random pattern apply Gelish colors in Coco Cabana Banana (neon yellow), Shake It Til You Samba (neon pink), and Oocha Coocha Bing Bang Bam Alakazy Alakazam (teal shimmer). Colors should touch or slightly overlap. Cure.
3. Apply a very thin layer of After Dark (purple) over the cured multi-colored layer. Do not cure.

4. With a dotting tool apply small dots of Gelish Top-It Off (gel sealer) randomly onto the uncured purple layer. As the Top-It Off spreads, the multi-colored layer will show through. Reload your dotting tool every three or four dots to achieve different size dots until entire nail is dotted. Cure.
