Earth Day comes once a year for most of us, but at Ginger Bay Salon & Spa, it’s a 365-day-a-year proposition. With two St. Louis-area locations, Ginger Bay takes its commitment to the environment seriously. This year, as in years past, Ginger Bay will donate  approximately $13,000 to the Audubon Society of Missouri, a portion of which will be generated by the salon’s Earth Month Pedicure. This luxurious 60-minute service includes a warm exfoliating mask, hydrating mask, hot stones, and a hand, foot, and leg massage. Other than the nail polish, the products are all earth-friendly.  “All of the products incorporated in the service are from Aveda and are naturally derived from plants and flowers,” says owner/CEO Laura A. Ortmann.

Originally created as a seasonal service — for March and April —the Earth Month Pedicure became so popular that the salon decided to keep it on the menu year-round as part of its Earth Month initiatives. “When we offer this service in March and April, we donate $10 of the service to our Earth Month charity. The remaining 10 months of the year, we donate $5 from every service,” Ortmann notes.

“We have a very strong culture and philanthropic mission at Ginger Bay. We reuse, repurpose, and recycle as much as possible,” says Ortmann. “The salon donates its used electronics to a local shelter that provides work for individuals with physical challenges. It recycles over four tons of paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum per year, and printed materials are produced on post-consumer recycled content using soy ink.” The salon’s gently used linens are even given to local women’s shelters and animal rescue centers.
