Rockstar toes (also called “glitter toes”) burst onto the nail scene in 2007. This messy mix of gel or acrylic product and loose glitter brought a new level of color and sparkle to the toes. While clients loved the bling, techs loved the fun — and the $20-or-so upcharge. Though rockstar toes saw their popularity peak between 2011 and 2013, glittery toenails remain with us, and better quality glitters and micro-glitters have improved appearance and wearability.
The technique has also improved since the look was first introduced. “I apply my glitter with a little makeup brush now, instead of back in the day when we were just dumping the glitter onto the nail. We were wasting more than we were using!” recalls Las Vegas-based nail tech G Elizondo.
