For experienced techs, smile lines become less and less of an issue because of their skills with the brush. But every tech, no matter her level of experience, will occasionally make a smudge, or have a slight hand tremor that completely ruins what was going to be a delicate and sweeping smile line.

Correcting a smile line is rather simple, but the technique can vary depending on whether you’re using gels, acrylics, or polish. Rumiko Nakaya, educator and advisor for Nail Labo explains how she fixes smile line imperfections in gels.

“I wipe the brush first, and then I reposition my hand to get a better angle toward the back side of the smile line, opposite the free edge. Make a nice stroke with the brush to clean the smile line’s edge, and then you can reapply the smile line if necessary.”
