“Try it, you will love it,” says Georgette Torell about the homemade skin soothing and sloughing recipe she used to combat dry skin when she was a flight attendant. Torell, now a nail technician at Hottest Touch Nail Salon in Satellite Beach, Fla., recommends the following formula for softening hands (double the recipe for pedicures).

  • I tablespoon granulated sugar

  • I tablespoon lime juice (the kind that comes in the squeezable plastic battles is fine)

  • 1½ tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Mix well. Place half the mixture in each palm, then gently rub it all over hands and between fingers. Take care not to be too aggressive, since sugar can be quite abrasive, warns Torell. Finally, rinse with club soda “This can be daintily poured from a small carafe;’ she says If retailing is a priority, Torell advises substituting a professional oil in place of the olive oil, and encouraging clients to mix up a batch at home When she uses the mixture on herself, the softness lasts a full three days, she says.

Georgette Torell owner ofHottest Touch Nail Salon in Satellite Beach, Fla., mixes an effective skin softening and sloughing formula from ordinary kitchen ingredients. The treatment is a standard part of her pedicure, while she offers it as an odd-on service for manicure clients.
