The Sky’s the Limit: The Top 3 and the Bottom 3

Week6_top3

Challenge 6, sponsored by Gel II, asked our Top 7 to take on famous skylines from around the world and translate them into nail art. They were allowed to use a combination of gel, acrylic, polish, gel-polish, and acrylic paint to make a 3-D cityscape. Additionally, contestants were asked to make a step-by-step tutorial and upload it to Nail Art Gallery.

This week’s guest judge was Rosie Johnson of Gel II. Permanent judges include CND’s Jan Arnold, NAILS NTNA season 2 winner Lavette Cephus, NAILS editor Erika Kotite, NAILS senior editor Beth Livesay, and the rest of the team at NAILS Magazine.

In alphabetical order, the top 3 are:

Celina: Your detailed work stood out to the judges. The depths and shadows of the sunset, water, boat, and lamppost drew us in. There’s a lot to look at and admire here.

Lauren: Memphis is alive and well! The judges were dazzled by your perfect lines and use of all 10 tips. The foil technique on the water and different building shapes are gorgeous. The demo was informative and thoroughly explained but we wish we could have seen how the pieces were attached.

Sarah: The judges think your design looks exactly like a photograph. You prove time and time again that simplicity can be beautiful. We applaud your choice of portraying the city at night and love the hand painted bricks, bridge, and shark fin.

The following tech can breathe again. She is in the middle of this week’s pack and is safe. Congratulations to:

Torie: The judges were instantly transported to Chicago through your design. The transition from day to night was unexpected and very much appreciated. You nailed the Chicago script and the bean. Great job!

Unfortunately, there always has to be a bottom group. The bottom 3, in alphabetical order, are:

Alecia: You perfectly balanced this work of art with fun (King Kong) and seriousness (9/11 tribute). The judges loved your roadwork nails and that you went for it in terms of building skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty. Just make sure to identify all 10 tips in your demo if they can’t all be seen in the finished design.

Halley: We love that you chose to glimpse into the future. The natural backdrop of the mountains is also a unique choice. The judges wish there had been more detailing in the buildings though.

Winnie: The judges love that you once again went outside of the box. You challenged yourself to make a lively city look (un)dead. With Halloween around the corner, this was a seasonally smart choice. Cleaner lines would have made this city that much creepier.
