Cancer Patients Find Pampering and Healing Go Together

Joy Johnson started Survive and Thrive to offer complimentary spa services to cancer patients. She was inspired by the loss of her mother to cancer and also by the healing she has seen happen when cancer sufferers put themselves into your loving hands.

Nails & Faces of Joy created the Survive and Thrive Program that offers beauty and pampering service to current cancer patients. Survive and Thrive allows patients during their diagnosis to receive one complimentary service on a monthly basis, ranging from manicures to eyebrow design. With the required doctor’s note or social worker’s referral (and renewal notes needed every six months), detailing what they can receive, patients can find a way to adapt to their newfound appearances that cancer treatment creates.

The passion behind Survive and Thrive stems from owner, Joy A. Johnson’s (@nailsfacesofjoy) personal connection with the disease. Her mother was a fashion model who battled breast cancer. She became a survivor in remission, and was engaged to get married when she was killed in a car accident. “I watched my mother’s appearance deteriorate,” Johnson says. "If the pain of cancer treatment wasn’t enough for one to go through, the physical changes and side effects that many patients experience—while battling the disease—heightens the trauma and struggle, especially for women who feel forced to abandon the joy of a beauty routine.”

With patience and compassion, Johnson’s services to cancer patients are rendered confidentially. Confidentiality is a key factor, while volunteering with a nationally well-known organization that provides support to cancer patients. She also volunteers quarterly with a local cancer support center, showing women how to adapt and enhance their new appearance.

Currently, Johnson serves as an International Educator and Corporate Trainer for American International Industries having traveled to Serbia, France and all over the United States. She has represented and educated on brands such as Ardell Lashes, China Glaze Nail Lacquer, Clean & Easy and Gigi Wax. And served as a Freelance Makeup/Nail Stylist for CKone, Lancôme and Nars Cosmetics.
