Orly GelFX Shade Shifter is an effects coat that shifts from a dark tone to completely transparent, exposing the base color underneath. As the temperature changes, your nail color will begin to show through with a gradated, spotted, or tie-dye effect.

Denise Kelley is an educator and brand ambassador for Orly and SpaRitual and on-set nail stylist in Los Angeles. Follow these steps to see how Kelley created this spotted 2015 design.

To start, perform a waterless manicure. Apply Orly Nail Tip Primer to the nail tips and apply a thin layer of Orly GelFX Basecoat. Cure for 30 seconds under an LED light. Wipe nails with Orly Dry Brush to remove the tacky layer. Apply two coats of Orly GelFX color of choice and cure. This example demonstrates GelFX in Shine.

Follow these steps for a spotted effect:

1. Apply one coat of Orly GelFX Shade Shifter over the base color skipping the ring finger. Do not cure.

2. Apply dots of GelFX Topcoat using Orly Dotter Duo over the Shade Shifter. Cure.

3. Apply top coat and cure. Cleanse with Orly GelFX 3-in-1 Cleanser and lint-free wipes and finish with GelFX Cuticle Oil.

4. When your body is hot, the shade shifts to a dark tone.

These steps demonstrate how you can create a design to reveal with temperature change:

1. Create nail art on an accent nail using Orly Instant Artist water-based paint and allow to dry. Here, Kelley painted 2015 on the ring fingernail.

2. Apply two coats of Orly GelFX Shade Shifter, making sure to cure between coats.

3. Apply top coat and cure. Cleanse with Orly GelFX 3-in-1 Cleanser and lint-free wipes and finish with GelFX Cuticle Oil.

4. When your body is cold, the shade becomes transparent and reveals the base color.
