Something completely amazing happened this past week. My best friend’s daughter came in to get a manicure and pedicure from me as part of her beauty rituals leading up to her junior prom. She and her boyfriend were both nominated for prom queen and king. I have known Courtney since she was 8 years old and have loved watching her become such a beautiful and talented young woman. This past Saturday night I got a text telling me that she and her boyfriend were crowned prom queen and king! I am so stinking happy for her (and her mom!) and I am so glad that I got to contribute to the memory since she absolutely adored her nails. The picture shown is of her nails.

I learned a very valuable lesson in the last few weeks as well. I learned that to have a successful business one must be personable, dedicated, flexible, and that sometimes the small stuff is really not worth stressing over. Most importantly, I was reminded how important it is to take care of one’s personal well-being. Our jobs require the ability to put other’s needs before our own and to take care of what they need despite lack of sleep, a missed chance to go grocery shopping, and countless other things. While I love my job and do truly enjoy taking the very best care of the people who come to see me, I forgot how important it is to take care of myself and my own body.

I need a moment to not take care of someone else. My body has been killing me from the amount of pedicures and massages I have been doing. I treated myself to a massage, which is unusual for me because I never pay for them (I always trade for them). I also gave myself a much needed pedicure and manicure. I realized the value of my friends and committed to lunch dates and meeting for drinks and dinner after a long work day. (Special thank yous to Jennifer, Monica, and Lauren) I also remembered how amazing it feels to treat myself to a guilty pleasure of spending an evening with my CSI: Crime Scene Investigator’s DVDs and a glass of wine.

After all, what is it I am working towards anyway? I don’t have my job just to pay my bills, even though I don’t consider what I do a job, it’s too special, it’s not work. I work so I can enjoy the things in my life that I love. It’s the bigger picture that counts and I can’t lose sight of that.

Not Good at Saying No

Where to start...where to start...well, let's start with: Why start over? When I graduated from nail school I was immediately hired at a busy full-service salon, and I started working hard to build a clientele. I
