My husband and I are trying to look for a good location to open a nail salon. But we don't know how to start if we get a location. Do we have to contact with state board of cosmetology to ask for permission before we open the shop? And how we do it? Please help! When considering a location you should know what the state laws are, for instance, with regard to bathroom facilities.

You also need to find out what licensing is required from the state board as well as the city you are going to open your business, such as occupancy and business licenses. Call the city and ask and go to your stat board's website to find out.

When looking for a location, especially since yours will be a new business, you need street exposure. Also consider what other salons are in your area, how close they are, and what type of atmosphere they have.

Consider what kind of signage you will need as well. When negotiating with the potential landlord ask about not allowing other nail salons or beauty salons with nail techs, get the square footage costs, deposits, and information on any other expenses, such as electricity and gas. The landlord should have an idea of the costs, so you can put a pencil to your monthly expenses before you commit. Square footage will depend on the facility, such as a "A" shopping center will be higher than a "B" shopping center but visability of an "A" can help walk in business.

Once you have made the decision as to where you are going to open, apply for all the licenses. If you are compliant with what state board requires it should be a breeze!
