This year marks the 50th anniversary of the French Manicure, one of the most recognizable beauty innovations of the modern era. To commemorate the milestone, ORLY (the company founded by Jeff Pink, the first American manufacturer to package coordinated polishes under the name “French manicure”) is leading a celebration honoring the manicure's enduring influence on fashion, beauty and culture.
According to a press release from ORLY, the French Manicure was developed in 1976 and quickly became synonymous with timeless elegance. Its clean, natural aesthetic soon appeared on international fashion runways before evolving into one of the world's most enduring and universally recognized beauty looks.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary, ORLY is leading several initiatives recognizing the French Manicure's lasting place in American beauty history, including:
- A proposal to establish French Manicure Day, creating an annual observance celebrating one of beauty's most iconic designs.
- The submission of the original ORLY French Manicure Kit for consideration by the Smithsonian's Personal Care and Cosmetics Collection, recognizing its significance as an artifact of American beauty and fashion history.
- A historical archive documenting the origins, evolution and cultural influence of the French Manicure across five decades of fashion and beauty.
- Anniversary programming surrounding New York Fashion Week, celebrating the manicure's enduring relationship with runway beauty.
"What began as a simple solution for Hollywood became something far greater than I ever imagined," said Jeff Pink, founder of ORLY and creator of the French Manicure. "Seeing the French Manicure embraced by generations of people around the world has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. Fifty years later, I'm humbled that it continues to inspire confidence, creativity and timeless style."
Few beauty innovations have achieved the longevity or cultural significance of the French Manicure. Its influence extends far beyond salons, shaping runway beauty, bridal traditions, editorial imagery and everyday self-expression while inspiring countless reinterpretations across generations.
"This anniversary is about preserving beauty history," said Chief Operating Officer Tal Pink "The French Manicure is part of the broader story of American innovation, fashion and culture. Our hope is to honor not only its origins, but also the artists, nail professionals and consumers who have kept it relevant for fifty years."
Throughout the anniversary, ORLY will partner with members of the beauty, fashion and museum communities to celebrate the French Manicure's remarkable legacy while inspiring the next generation of creativity.
