Artist Spotlight

A nail artist can exist in the most unlikely of places, and though NAILS keeps its attention focused on licensed nail professionals, this unlikely non-licensed nail artist has become a fan-favorite for his polish company employer.

Meet China Glaze’s “Gery the Shipping Guy.”

A.I.I.’s Gerardo Chavez, aka “Gery the Shipping Guy” works in the shipping and receiving department for the company, while also promoting China Glaze and other A.I.I. brands with his talent for nail art.

Gerardo Chavez works in the shipping department for A.I.I., the parent company behind well-known nail brands like China Glaze, IBD, EZ Flow, and It’s So Easy. When Gery saw the wide array of polish colors he routinely sent out, he was inspired to incorporate the varying shades into his own art. (Gery is an accomplished artist and holds a degree in graphic design.)

He then started doing nail art on tips and nails, and when an early zebra stripe design he did caught the eye of marketing director Irene Chao, Chavez got a Facebook page to promote his art and the brand, and “Gery the Shipping Guy” was born.

China Glaze has a strong social media and online presence, with the brand’s Facebook page receiving over 42,500+ “likes” to date, and its Twitter account updated regularly with new swatch photos of client nail designs. So the addition of Chavez helps round out the appeal of the brand.

“Drawing on a live person is much more difficult than drawing on a flat, lifeless piece of paper,” says Chavez of his designs. “It takes some getting used to as well as getting used to the lacquer base nail polish, as it dries very fast and I therefore must work even faster.” But Chavez is an avid nail artist and enjoys the challenge of creating designs that appeal to a wide audience.

He makes festive designs for the different seasons and holidays, and posts these to his “Gery the Shipping Guy” Facebook page.

“I think people really get a kick from the fact that a guy can create cute nail designs for women,” says Chavez. “I try to come up with designs that women will like, and I enjoy reading all the comments on Facebook and hope that I can help inspire others with my designs just like others have inspired me with their designs.”

Chavez won A.I.I.’s in-house Halloween nail art competition with these nail art designs.
