Consumer Beauty Press Learning More About Nails

NAILS editor is interviewed for article on professional nail care, and although not always quoted correctly, the article is still good for the industry in general.

A writer from Elle Magazine, Nina Malkin, interviewed me a few months ago for an article about nails. Specifically, she asked about any odd or unusual facts. Our discussion lasted nearly two hours and drifted from nail art to nail care in general.

Ms. Malkin also interviewed Jan Bragulla of Creative Nail Design, who recently shared her advance copy of Elle's March issue with me. We were both pleased that this was a rare instance of a major consumer fashion magazine giving favorable mention to professional salon services for nail care. (All too often, such publications encourage a do-it-yourself approach.)

A bit discouraging, however, was seeing my references to nail art attributed to Ms. Bragulla, and Ms. Malkin's conclusion that current nail art trends are "freakish." (That certainly wasn't my comment.) Other quotes were lacking subtle shades of meaning that can easily alter interpretations of what we actually said.

Nonetheless, the overall coverage was good for the professional nail industry, and it's good to see the consumer magazines taking an interest. In fact, just yesterday I was on the phone with two different writers from another magazine. They weren't specific, but the focus of their proposed article is to be nail specialty salons. We'll have to watch future issues for that.

Which leads me to a request: At NAILS Magazine, we try to keep up with national coverage, but there are many regional and local publications which run features about nail care that we never see. If you come across any articles of particular interest, please send us a copy. We'd like to see how the professional nail industry is perceived in various parts of the country. This is an important step in the process of educating the general public and establishing a positive image for nail care professionals everywhere.
