“I wanted the salon to be very chic and luxurious but have sex appeal, all at the same time,” says Candice Idehen, owner of the new 1,400-sq.-ft. Bed of Nails in New York City. “I didn’t want the salon to feel too masculine or too feminine, but have the perfect mix of both. I plan to introduce the idea of male grooming, so I kept men in mind when designing.”

The hardest part of bringing her vision to life was the custom-made pedicure chairs. “I designed them with a furniture company overseas. I knew I wanted the chairs to be statement pieces and to really encompass luxury, and I couldn’t find anything like them in stores here in New York, or the U.S. for that matter,” she says. “I didn’t want the traditional nail salon chairs with the massage button. For the look of the salon, I envisioned tufted velvet chairs similar to a headboard since the theme and name of the salon is Bed of Nails. I added the Swarovski crystal stones to heighten the luxury factor and my love of all things sparkly.”

Picking the wall color was the second hardest thing to do. “I didn’t want a color that was too masculine or too feminine, and I didn’t want to add too much intensity with the brick exposure,” she says. “I bought a bunch of paint samples but ended up importing a wallpaper made in London. It’s elegant and reads silver metallic in some light but gives off a greyish lilac in other light. The events we plan to host will also work beautifully with the wallpaper because all of the chandeliers give off a beautiful reflection when dimmed on the brick wall and wallpaper.”
