Nail artist June Moffo of LA Nails in Philadelphia, Pa., thrives on painting portraits of celebrities on her clients’ nails. Moffo, who has been doing nails for 16 years and nail art for 12, likes to hand-paint the portraits, but during the World Series last year there was such a demand for nail portraits of the Phillies players that Moffo made transfers of her Phillies players portraits of the apply to nails. Especially popular were the portraits of Lenny Dykstra, also known as “Nails.” Far less expensive than the hand-painted portraits, which run $200 a piece, the transfers take only minutes to apply and cost $20. “I can work from a photograph,” says Moffo. “If the photographs are good quality, I reduce them down, treat them down, treat them with a solution, and transfer them to the nail.” Moffo has done portraits of such personalities as Nancy and Ronald Reagan and Michael Keaton. She mails one to the celebrity for autographing; the other goes to the nail client. “I did the Nancy and Ronald Reagan portraits on nail tips. I painted two each of them. I sent both sets to one of my clients who was going to a cocktail party at the White House."
