A pioneer on two fronts: Both in all-natural services and the alcohol-serving realm, Zaza Nail Bar and Wine Lounge offers clients a space to relax in the bustling tech hub that has become San Francisco’s South Beach neighborhood.
The salon offers nail services, as well as facials, waxing, and eyelash extensions.

The Scoop
Before all-natural nail salons were so trendy, before a complimentary glass of wine was basically a given, and before San Francisco started to dominate the tech scene, former real estate agent Rachel Cheng had a vision to open up a healthier, cleaner salon with more consistent services than she’d been able to find in the Bay Area.

“We kind of became a pioneer in the whole healthy nail salon movement,” she says of Zaza Nail and Wine Lounge, which opened in 2005. “And for our liquor license, it took some convincing. People didn’t understand why I would want one for a nail salon — they thought we were too fancy.”
But first-time customers soon became loyal clients and friends, drawn by the unwavering quality at Zaza, a name meaning “belonging to all” or “movement” that Cheng read in a baby book. When Cheng combined quality services with sommelier-quality wine, she says Zaza instantly became a staple to the surrounding community.
“We’ve watched some of our clients go from being completely single to being married with three kids,” she says. “It’s crazy how much we’ve grown with our clientele.”
After reading through a baby name book, owner Rachel Cheng decided on the name Zaza, a Hebrew word meaning “flowery movement.”
The Clientele
The salon is a couple of blocks away from AT&T Park, the Giants’ football stadium that overlooks the harbor and draws in wives of the team’s players, as well as lots of out-of-towners from surrounding hotels. While visitors often elect to get acrylics, rhinestones, or other types of nail art, Cheng says the majority of Zaza’s regular local clientele err on the conservative side and prefer a simple-yet-classy manicure as opposed to any funky designs.

“They’re nerds,” Cheng says laughing. “They are smart and wealthy professionals. They run businesses or work in tech. There are more artsy areas in San Francisco, but not as much in South Beach.”
The ‘Hood
Cheng has witnessed many drastic changes in the culture of the South Beach neighborhood, once a remote area that has evolved into a thriving business district full of high rises, tech startups, and venture capitalists.
“It’s a completely different neighborhood, and people have lots of disposable income,” she says. While having plenty of wealthy corporations nearby is probably a great thing for her service-related beauty business, Cheng has seen former neighbors carry the unfavorable burden of a thriving economy. “We’ve been lucky enough to have a decent lease in order to stay where we are, but a lot of other retailers have had to leave because of the increased rent.”
Zaza also does lots of pop-ups, a popular tactic in San Francisco that helps businesses to showcase their work and gain exposure — not that Zaza necessarily needs it. Its established brick-and-mortar is in one of the busiest neighborhoods of the city.

Zaza clients can choose between a professionally selected variety of wines.
The Menu
The salon’s focus is on performing a well-executed all-natural manicure that’s understated yet appreciated by the corporate clientele. (They also do waxing, lash extensions, and facials, but nails make up most of their business.) Zaza’s price points are in line with the rest of the city, with a gel manicure and classic pedicure starting at $45 and $35 respectively.
“We focus on the perfect paint job, removing cuticle excess, and reducing calluses,” she says. “Our strengths are in the details, and we take our time.”
Their other huge focus? Wine. Because the wine is all-natural and hand-selected, Cheng likes to call the professionally curated collection “no-headache wine.” Most of their wine menu is light and refreshing, and she says rosé was a big hit this past summer.
“Every Friday, we have a sommelier who comes in and offers wine tasting flights,” she says. “It’s a lot of fun and people really enjoy their experience.”

Zaza’s decor is on the classy and conservative side with limestone countertops, gray walls, and purple couches in the front waiting area, which was recently transformed into more of a wine lounge. Clients are encouraged to relax and chat with friends as they wait for their polish to dry or for a friend to finish her appointment, but many stay just to socialize.
“We have a spacious, open floor plan, so we host a lot of corporate functions,” Cheng says. “Our salon is very modern and minimalist, and there are thoughtful accents. I go to the flower mart and get fresh flowers once a week.”
The Staff
The Zaza team knows how to have fun while on the clock, and having a personality cohesive with the rest of the staff is just as important as technical skill. Their loyalty is apparent, as some staff members have been with Zaza since inception. Cheng says this is because employees are well-taken care of.

“This is our second home. We have get-togethers, and if you come into our breakroom, it’s often like a buffet back there,” Cheng says. “It’s a very family-like environment and we pride ourselves on having a really low turnover with our staff. That speaks volumes for our quality.”
