The Nail Technician's Bill Of Rights

2 min to read

There is no constitution for the nail industry so there really isn’t a bill of rights for nail technicians. But as the industry works to heighten its professionalism, nail technicians need to know what they can expect from manufacturers, salon owners, and their state board, who knows? Maybe the state boards will adopt them.

Nail technicians shall have access to information. Nail technicians need access to all the information available about the products and techniques they use. They shall be made aware of how the chemicals they use interact. They need to know whether a manufacturer is committed to the professional nail industry and whether that company invests in research and development. Nail technicians need regular information about beauty supplier education and service and they should be told before they have to ask. Nail technicians are entitled to expect thoroughness, accuracy, and the truth from their trade magazines.

Nail technicians shall enjoy a healthy and safe work environment. Salon owners must make their salon buildings safe by installing adequate ventilation equipment and ergonomic workstations. Salon workers, and not just those who do nails, need regular breaks and reasonable schedules. Nail technicians need suitable equipment, whether it’s the right file or the light chair. Nail technicians also have a responsibility in this regard, as well: They must do everything they can to work safely, including wearing a mask, disinfecting their implements and workstations between clients, and being knowledgeable about chemicals.

Nail technicians have the right to expect their state board to look out for their interests as much as the consumers’ interest. Nail technicians go through the courses demanded by the state boards, are licensed by those bodies, and pay those agencies fees. They have a right to expect that unlicensed and illegal salons will be investigated and penalized. They have a right to ask how their fees are being used to enhance their profession and ensure its survival.

Nail technicians have the right to refuse service to any client. If a nail professional determines that a client should be seen by a doctor before being serviced, her decision should not be questioned or second-guessed. Nail technicians are entitled to charge a fair price for their services in order to earn a profit. Nail technicians are not required to tolerate abusive, dishonest, or inconsiderate clients. When necessary, a nail professional has the right to release a client.
