United They Stand: NIA and NNTG Merge

2 min to read

Two great associations have just joined forces: In early February, the Nails Industry Association (NIA) acquired the National Nail Technicians Group (NNTG). The merger means increased power and representation for nail technicians.

The NNTG was founded almost eight years ago by two very committed nail technicians who wanted to see New York state get nail licensing. Karen Lessler and Denise Andresen were determined, aggressive, and passionate in their quest to get legitimacy for New York nail technicians. Their efforts paid off big when New York finally passed a licensing law that went into effect in 1993. Lessler has learned enough about the political game by now that she — and Andresen — are moving on to careers in political lobbying.

The new, merged association will be known as NIA, but the individual members will benefit from the power in their combined numbers. NNTG had set up an infrastructure of state chapters and state delegates that will be continued by NIA, as will its focus on education and professionalism. No doubt, NIA will also be able to assist in the efforts to license the remaining unlicensed states.

NIA will continue to offer members a benefits package that includes liability insurance and a subscription to NAILS Magazine. Although NIA has been most closely associated with NAILS Magazine, the new board (which will be elected in June) will become more independent and more effective in striking out for nail technicians.

NAILS Magazine is proud to be associated with this group of nail professionals and will continue to lend our support in advancing its cause.
