Throughout the communities most severely impacted by the Los Angeles County wildfires, the acts of kindness are moving faster than the fires.
OFFERING AID TO THOSE FACING LOSS FROM THE LA COUNTY FIRES
In total, four fires have raged through almost 40,000 acres, destroying over 12,000 structures, and at this writing, 16 lives have been lost, with that number certain to climb.
Because I live in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, adjacent to Altadena and Pasadena, I’ve been a longtime member of several Facebook groups for residents. I’m watching in real time as people offer up help, advice, and support to those impacted by the Eaton Canyon fire. (The other damaging fire, located in the Pacific Palisades on the westside of Los Angeles, is now considered the most destructive in Los Angeles County's history.)
A therapist posted and shared reputable sources for trauma response, including valuable Apps that address Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
One resident, who did not evacuate but is now behind the barricade and not allowed to leave, told folks who are not permitted back into the area and are concerned about the state of their home to send her a DM and she would go to as many places as she’s allowed, take pictures, and share them privately.
A photo (circa 1980) of a young couple and their newborn survived to float into a neighbor's yard; that photo was posted in one of the Facebook pages and its grateful owners were reunited with this memento of happier times.
Pets and people are lost and then found. Supplies are being distributed, and emergency responders shown love. So, so much kindness.
In our salon community, always a giving group, stylists are offering free services to those most affected.
At AwareHair.com, they have assembled an interactive map of over 60 salons across Los Angeles offering services during this devastating event.
What I've also seen--sadly and maybe inevitably--are scams. If you are wondering how you can help, here are some fact-checked ways to be of service that are reliable and will welcome your support.
DONATE TO THE PRO BEAUTY ASSOCIATION
The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) offers a Disaster Relief Fund dedicated to supporting beauty industry professionals affected by natural disasters. Established in 1955, this fund provides emergency financial assistance for immediate needs such as clothing, food, bills, and supplies Notably, 100% of donations go directly to individuals in need, regardless of PBA membership status.
In 2024, the fund distributed over $400,000 to 880 professionals, offering critical support during challenging times.
For those interested in contributing or applying for aid, more information is available on the PBA's official website.
