Scholarship recipients also shared their visions of how they intend to pay their success forward. Joelle Bettura of Casals Aveda Institute in Austintown, Ohio, wrote about her goal of providing on-location nail services. Growing up with a brother who needed special care, she saw how much her mom looked forward to a nail professional who visited her home to provide manicures. “In my heart, I feel that my purpose is to give back to others by doing something I am passionate about — nails,” she says.

Karen Lazenby
Winner Karen Lazenby of Paul Mitchell The School in Columbus, Ohio, grew up in an art-filled home and earned a fine arts degree before embarking on graduate work in Florence, Italy. She describes the art involved in professional nail design as personally rewarding. “For me, the ultimate kick is the gratitude on the faces of those who benefit from my work. It is the human element that is so vital to the work of the beauty industry,” she says.
The other recipients were Christina Hammon of Casals Aveda Institute, Austintown, Ohio; Jackie Kutchel of Casals Aveda Institute, Austintown, Ohio; and Jasmine Waters of Creative Images Institute of Cosmetology, Sidney, Ohio.
