Length, shape, and health are even more important with intricate nail designs, according to Allure magazine's September 2012 issue.

Especially for manicures that require a layer of glue or brightly colored polish, a good basecoat is important. Applying products onto the bare nail is one of the most damaging things you can do.

A good quality topcoat is similarly important. Allure recommends Essie's Everyday Top Coat over a fast-drying topcoat, which can cause chipping.

Although celebrities like lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj are rocking the long talon-like nails, manicurist Jin Soon Choi told Allure that they aren't as elegant in real life. Instead, she recommends keeping nails short and slightly rounded to elongate fingers.

Lastly, tell clients to stash a cuticle-oil pen in their purse and apply hand lotion before bed to keep skin and nails healthy and moistened.
