According to the April 2012 issue of InStyle magazine, opposite — and even clashing — hues of polish and lipstick can look good together.

Makeup artist Diane Kendal recommends picking out a shade of lipstick first, and then playing with nail polishes across the color spectrum.

Swipe two different hues on your index fingers to see which is most striking with your lips. Swap traditional pairings (like green and pink) for unexpected ones.

Lilac polish and coral lips create a sweet candy-colored mix, while a cherry lip and teal polish feel edgy. And for the ultimate one-two punch, opt for a hot pink lip and an orange nail.

Additional recommended combinations: Essie's To Buy or Not to Buy with Rimmel London Lasting Finish lipstick by Kate Moss in No. 12; and CND's Colour polish in Electric Orange with Smashbox Be Legendary lipstick in Pink Petal.
