Recently, long-lasting gel polish has gained a significant at-home appeal, according to Allure magazine's December 2011 Beauty Reporter.

Through various starter kits and gel polish brands, the once salon-only treatment is becoming more accessible to the Do It Yourself (DIY) crowd. Certain gel polish starter kits come equipped with an LED light for drying in between coats, while others feature special formulas that create a shiny seal without UV rays.

The downside, says Allure, is that most brands carry DIY gel products that only last about a few days rather than a few weeks.
