Michigan school instructors and students should be aware of several changes to the state’s licensing exams. Candidates must pass the practical portion of the exam before they can schedule an exam date for the theory portion. For the cosmetology exam and the manicurist exam, no models are allowed — use mannequins only. For the manicurist exam, base coat, polish coats, and top coat must be applied on three nails only. For all cosmetology related instructor exams, the multiple choice questions have increased to 80 (from 70). Also, fees have increased for the exams: $85 per portion or $144 if both portions are paid for at the time of registration.
