Attention nail techs practicing in Texas: you must use autoclaves to sterilize all nondisposable instruments, according to an opinion by Attorney General of Texas, Greg Abbot, dated May 18. Previously in Texas there were two conflicting laws — Senate Bill 411 and House Bill 1304; one stated that an autoclave must be used (Senate Bill 411), while the other gave the option for either an autoclave or a dry heat, ultraviolet or other approved sterilizer (House Bill 1304). Abbot said Senate Bill 411, which specifies that autoclaves must be used, prevails because it is the more recent law. The law also says that salon owners, managers, and school operators must provide autoclaves for use.
